Books I Hated With Gorgeous Covers

You all know what I’m talking about. You see a cover, and it’s SO beautiful you immediately fall in love with it, and you’d do ANYTHING to have the book in your hands right now so you can drool over it. Then you start to read it. And you get angry. WHY IS SUCH A TERRIBLE BOOK DRESSED IN SUCH A GORGEOUS COVER?! You’re devastated, and a little piece of your soul dies.

Here are just a few of the covers I loooove that housed stories I strongly disliked or flat out hated:

sweet evil tigers curse promise shadows die for me

between devil black ice half bad origin

prophecy ellen oh talker 25 fiendish poison

What books did you hate that had a beautiful cover?

  1. I really fell for the Tigers Curse cover and bought the book only to read it halfway and hide it behind a stack of old books in my bookshelf. Then there’s Valkyrie Rising by Ingrid Paulson, Crewel by Gennifer Albin, Shatter Me by Taherah Mafi and Black City by Elizabeth Richards.

  2. Definitely have to mention The Selection novels here. I didn’t hate the first one, I thought it had promise but as I finished the rest I realized, “I have made a huge mistake!”

  3. I was just thinking about this same topic recently. Kind of scary, ya know? Like Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo. I’m (irrationally) obsessed with that cover. What if the book doesn’t stand up? What if it’s… terrible? We are risk-takers, us readers. Ha! Things I never though I’d say…

I’m so with you on Poison. I was so severely disappointed by that book that it makes me mad to think how they got me, hook line and sinker. Sherry Thomas’s The Burning Sky got me with that, too. And I’m sure a million more have and will.

  4. Great post! I really hate it when the story just does not match the cover. One recent title that comes to mind is Imitation. The cover was striking, but the story had way too many issues.

  5. Wow, those are some pretty covers, that’s for sure! I don’t think I’ve really had this problem as of yet. Pre-blogging, I can only remember liking most of the books I read, but I also was really careful to pick books I thought I would like. I know I will run into this problem soon though, I’m going to try my best to let the cover not affect me haha. If it’s even possible!

  6. YES! Thank you for putting Tiger’s Curse up there. So glad you agree. Sweet Evil as well-though I think that the third book was the worst in that series.

  7. The only beautiful cover that houses a horrendous story that I can think of off the top of my head is Black City by Elizabeth Richards. I was so excited for this book. I mean, it’s gorgeous! Plus, so many people rated it really highly, especially when it first came out.

As for what’s on your list, I’ve only read Die For Me and Tiger’s Curse. I enjoyed both of them, though. Most of the others are on my wishlist, however, so I’ll have to think carefully about whether or not I should buy them XD

  8. I always fall for the pretty cover. I’ve only read Sweet Evil from your list. I made it to the second book before I gave up.

Never judge a book by its cover indeed!

  9. OH MY GOD FRICKIN DIE FOR ME. Like that book should’ve been a warning sign for me, but noooo. I don’t even think I finished it TBH.

Erm… I think Dissonance has a beautiful cover but for some reason I couldn’t get into the story! Same goes with Eve and Adam. I LOVE THAT COVER *sobs* but the inside not so much. [Also special mention to that Lauren Myracle book with a starry sky cover.]

  10. Oh my gosh, I love this post. I felt the same way about Promise of Shadows and Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea. I also felt this way about A Thousand Pieces of You, which I didn’t necessarily dislike, but I don’t think it lived up to the book cover!

  11. It’s a shame you didn’t like Half Bad or Sweet Evil – those are ones I really intend to try! I am someone who ends up picking books up because of covers usually, and um, I should probably read more of the synopses. But yeah, this is a problem for a lot of people! I have seen a few too many negative reviews of Black Ice to even try it myself.
