Following the events of Avalon, Jeth Seagrave and his crew are on the run. Jeth is desperate to find the resources and funding he needs to rescue his mother from an ITA’s research lab and leave this whole galaxy behind for a new life somewhere else. But the ITA is just as desperate, and soon Jeth finds himself pursued by a mysterious figure hell-bent on capturing Jeth and his crew—dead or alive. In a last-ditch effort to save everyone he holds dear, Jeth enters into a bargain with the last person he ever thought he'd see again: Dax Shepherd, the galaxy’s newest and most fearsome crime lord. And he’s not the only one: upon arriving back at Peltraz spaceport for the first time since he witnessed the death of his old employer, Jeth discovers Dax has a new partner: Jeth’s mother, Marian.
I saw Mindee at a signing a while back, and during the panel she said that while writing this book, her mind was in a very dark place. That as a result, this book was dark. Which was why I was so excited to read this: I loooove dark! It wasn’t quite as dark story-wise as I was hoping, but Jeth? That’s another story.
He was very dark in this book. It’s refreshing to read an MC with flaws, one that screws up royally from time to time. Jeth made some serious mistakes. Sometimes he let darkness overwhelm him. I loved that! He craved the power of the Axis, even though he knew what it was doing to him. (The Axis was intriguing!)
I was surprised at my emotional attachment in this book! View Spoiler »I was actually upset when Avalon was destroyed! Even though she’s only a ship (a fictional ship at that), I was sad to see her go. I was also sad when Jeth’s mom died. It felt so unfair for him to have just gotten her back, only to lose her again. Again, I love that. Because life is not fair, and sometimes there are no happy endings. Happiness comes with sacrifice. « Hide Spoiler
This book was intense and action-packed! There was never a dull moment. Something was always happening! There were a couple of shocks thrown in there, too. And there were scenes where I was on the edge of my seat, wondering, How are they going to get out of this one?! I love the danger that the characters faced at every turn!View Spoiler »I feel satisfied that we finally got to see Empyria, even if it was just a glimpse! « Hide Spoiler
