Five years after the destruction of the so-called rehabilitation camps that imprisoned her and countless other Psi kids, seventeen-year-old Suzume "Zu" Kimura has assumed the role of spokesperson for the interim government, fighting for the rights of Psi kids against a growing tide of misinformation and prejudice. But when she is accused of committing a horrifying act, she is forced to go on the run once more in order to stay alive.

Determined to clear her name, Zu finds herself in an uncomfortable alliance with Roman and Priyanka, two mysterious Psi who could either help her prove her innocence or betray her before she gets the chance. But as they travel in search of safety and answers, and Zu grows closer to the people she knows she shouldn't trust, they uncover even darker things roiling beneath the veneer of the country's recovery. With her future-and the future of all Psi-on the line, Zu must use her powerful voice to fight back against forces that seek to drive the Psi into the shadows and save the friends who were once her protectors.

My thoughts

“We’ve inherited the darkest legacy, but they don’t know that we’ve learned how to thrive in shadows and create our own light.”

The Darkest Minds trilogy is one of my all time favorite series, so I was thrilled to see Alexandra bringing some of my all time fave characters back for another round! I was excited to read through Zu’s perspective, I loved her in the originals. And it was positively wonderful to step back into the thrilling and cinematic world that I love (and missed) SO much!

Bracken’s storytelling is phenomenal. Even when there wasn’t much happening, I was never bored. And she has a way of bringing her world and characters to life in a manner that just makes them feel so real. It was amazing to see all of the beloved characters again! View Spoiler »

There was nothing in the world that would ever be powerful enough to keep us from being there to carry each other forward in those moments when our strength gave out.

I also really loved the new characters that were introduced! Roman is totally dreamy, and perfect for Zu (MY BABY ZU IS ALL GROWN UP AND FALLING IN LOVE *sobs*). But PRIYA. Oh my lawd I freaking LOVED her!!! She is definitely a new favorite. At first I didn’t care for her and thought she was a bit on the bitchy side, but just like with Vida she grew on me and I soon came to realize that she was one of my favorite characters! I adored her snark and ferociousness so much, she had me cracking up!

So, it’s really hard to talk about this book without giving anything away, but let me just say that you are in for a treat! Lots of exciting and unexpected turns and gripping edge-of-your-seat action! The stakes are high and the adrenaline is even higher. I can’t wait to see where the story goes next!

Favorite quotes

The way forward isn’t to choose the best of two bad choices, it’s finding a way to navigate between them. To create our own path.

If I could call down the lightning and burn out every last trace of darkness for my friends, I would. I would do it in an instant, even if it left me in ashes.
