Top Ten Books read in 2013:

Top 5 Dystopian:

Top 5 High Fantasy:

Top 5 Urban Fantasy:

Top 5 Science Fiction:

Here is where I usually do a breakdown by creatures: Best werewolf book, best vampires, mermaids, zombies. But this year, I have a little problem. I have barely read anything with any of those paranormal beings! It’s quite sad, actually. The only werewolf book I read was Thornhill (it was okay). The only vampire book I read was The Eternity Cure (of course it was great, it’s Julie Kagawa). The only mermaid book I read was September Girls (it was f*cking terrible). The only zombie books I read were Feed (hated it) and PODs (awful). So there went that…

I also usually do best mythology, but I only read 3 mythology: Touch of Death (awful), Abandon (even more awful), and Chaos of Stars. The latter didn’t necessarily wow me, but it wins by default because there is nothing better >.<

Best contemporary: tfios

Best debut: city of a thousand

Best sophomore: kinslayer

What about you? What were the best books YOu read this year?

  1. This is a really really nice way of setting out a best of post. I’m planning to do a Top 13 of 2013 post soon but it’s taking me a lot longer to sort out my favourites than I thought. I’ve read so many amazing books that I don’t think I’ll be able to narrow it down. D:

  2. I love what you did with your breakdown.

I’ve only read Iron traitor & Everbound from your top 10 books. The 5th wave is my January bookclub pick, so I’ll be reading that one soon. I can’t wait for Unhinged, Deception and City of a thousand dolls.

I loved The eternity cure and Crown of midnight is by far one of the best sequels I’ve ever read. I hardly read contemporary, but The fault in our stars blew me away too. I can’t wait to get started in my copy of Stormdancer :D

    • Ohh I hope you love 5th Wave! It was such a unique sci-fi, I loved it! And you need to read City of a Thousand Dolls asap – Jerrit!!! <3

EEP Stormdancer!! Just remember that it starts a little slow in the beginning – it’s very descriptive. But if you can just make it to Buruu’s entrance, it’s amazing I promise! And Kinslayer is the best sequel I’ve ever read, so you definitely need to pick that one up!

  3. Trayche

I’ve read only Unravel Me and I can say it was magnificent! Can’t wait to read at least five other books off this list!

  4. Julie Kagawa’s Iron King series is so awesome, but I haven’t read the Iron Traitor yet!! It’s on my to-do. Also I thought Hemlock was great, haven’t read Thornhill yet; is it just not as good?

    • The first book wasn’t quite as good as the Iron Fey, but the second book was much better!

And I loved Hemlock, but Thornhill was disappointing for me =/ I hope you like it better than I did!

  5. I love how you broke it all down into categories — very clever! I’ve heard good things about the Defiance series, but haven’t picked it up yet, but I’m more intrigued now that I see book 2 on your list! I’m totally going to start the Throne of Glass series, especially since I keep hearing how it gets BETTER with book 2! And YESSSSS for Unravel Me & Through the Ever Night — it’s rare when a series is better with book 2, but these were two wins for me this year too!

  6. LOOOOVE IT! So many awesome books on the list!!! :D I’m glad you included Unhinged even though it’s not released yet. seriously the best books I read this year were my highly anticipated 2014 ARCs. Haha. Maybe I shall include them when I do my Top 13 or 2013 or something like that.

    <333 the post! :D

    XX, Inky

  7. I’ve read a few of your picks–and loved them!!! Unravel Me had some awesome moments. Warner <3 And I'm afraid to read "The Fault in Our Stars." But I think I have to; everyone says such wonderful things even if it is a heartbreaker.
    Ninja Girl

  8. I’m reading the 5th Wave next. I’m a little wary after seeing some bad comments on the romance. We will see. So lucky you have already read Unhinged! I am hoping my library lets us check it out a few days before release. It’s happened before. :)

  9. Ooh fantastic list, Jessi! I totally agree with all the ones I have read, and for the ones I haven’t, I really need to pick them up soon. I haven’t even read Stormdancer let alone Kinslayer but it’s sitting on my shelf and I should really do something about that book before 2014 shouldn’t I? But either way, great list! Hopefully next year you find a lot more paranormal books that blow you away! :) <3
