Amy and Elder have finally left the oppressive walls of the spaceship Godspeed behind. They're ready to start life afresh--to build a home--on Centauri-Earth, the planet that Amy has traveled 25 trillion miles across the universe to experience.
But this new Earth isn't the paradise Amy had been hoping for. There are giant pterodactyl-like birds, purple flowers with mind-numbing toxins, and mysterious, unexplained ruins that hold more secrets than their stone walls first let on. The biggest secret of all? Godspeed's former passengers aren't alone on this planet. And if they're going to stay, they'll have to fight.
Amy and Elder must race to discover who--or what--else is out there if they are to have any hope of saving their struggling colony and building a future together. They will have to look inward to the very core of what makes them human on this, their most harrowing journey yet. Because if the colony collapses? Then everything they have sacrificed--friends, family, life on Earth--will have been for nothing.
Caution: Possible spoilers for the previous books!
It’s strange to have this series come to an end. To be honest, there aren’t many series I’ve actually seen all the way through (seriously, I can count them on one hand), so it’s not a feeling I’m used to! (I have some serious series commitment issues O_O) But this was a perfect conclusion to a fabulous sci-fi trilogy!
The best part: Centauri-Earth! EEP! We finally get to see it! And after the crazy cliffhanger in book 2, I was dying to set foot on the new planet. And the talk of monsters was super intriguing. I don’t want to give too much away, so I won’t go into depth on that. But it was awesome! Like, Jurassic Park meets Avatar awesome. The world was a foreign and unwelcoming place! I definitely wasn’t disappointed.
And of course, more secrets! Just when you think the crap can’t get any deeper, it does. Beth has a way of kicking your feet out from under you. Expect the unexpected, and don’t believe anything you’ve been told!
The relationship between Elder and Amy is just as complicated as it was in A Million Suns. It’s hard to tell where they stand with each other sometimes, despite the fact that it’s obvious they’re crazy about each other. At times I wanted to knock their heads together! Not to mention there was a new male in Amy’s life to complicate things even more: Chris. First of all, let me state that I did not like or trust him right from the start. I couldn’t pinpoint why (okay, I had my suspicions), but I just didn’t. And I turned out to be right…surprise, surprise! Always trust your instincts ;) Plus I felt bad for Elder when Amy was interacting with Chris, even though I don’t think he really ever had a real reason to be jealous.
By the way, I cried. Hard. Snot and everything. Toward the end, there’s a major sacrifice made by a certain character that will remain unnamed, and OH MY GAWD YOU GUYS. Beth, how could you?! You ripped my heart right out of my chest!!! But the end. Ahhhhhh. That is all I shall say. *sigh* I forgive you, Beth. I forgive you. (Can you pleeeaase make another series?!)
