The Others freed the cassandra sangue to protect the blood prophets from exploitation, not realizing their actions would have dire consequences. Now the fragile seers are in greater danger than ever before—both from their own weaknesses and from those who seek to control their divinations for wicked purposes. In desperate need of answers, Simon Wolfgard, a shape-shifter leader among the Others, has no choice but to enlist blood prophet Meg Corbyn’s help, regardless of the risks she faces by aiding him.

Meg is still deep in the throes of her addiction to the euphoria she feels when she cuts and speaks prophecy. She knows each slice of her blade tempts death. But Others and humans alike need answers, and her visions may be Simon’s only hope of ending the conflict.

For the shadows of war are deepening across the Atlantik, and the prejudice of a fanatic faction is threatening to bring the battle right to Meg and Simon’s doorstep…

My thoughts

Gosh, what can I say about this series that I haven’t already said?! It’s unlike anything I’ve ever read before!

My favorite part of this series by far is the characters. I love them so much! Tess, Simon, Meg, Sam, Grandfather Erebus, Jenni, Vlad, Nathan…I love them all! Anne Bishop’s characterization is awesome! Tess is definitely my favorite. She’s so badass! And you know when her hair starts turning green, then red, then streaking with black…she means business. I love it! I also really love the Crowgard. They are my favorite of the Gards! View Spoiler »

The tension between the humans and Others was higher than ever, it was crazy! War is on the horizon, and I’m very interested to see where Anne takes it in the next book. But seriously, are we really that stupid?! The bad humans ruined it for the ones who genuinely wanted peace. It was sad, really.

Um, can we please talk about how much I ship Simon and Meg. I LOVE THEM TOGETHER. Even more, though, I love that there’s not any romance between them. They have a very strong bond, but it hasn’t crossed that line (yet?? Hey, a girl can hope). I love that they support and protect each other. I especially love that everything Simon did was with her in mind. She was the basis for all of his decisions. He held her in such high regard it gave me warm fuzzies!

So, um, ORCASGARD?! Let’s have a moment of silence. FOR ME TO FANGIRL. Orcas are my favorite animal, you guys. The casual mention of Orcasgard made me squeal! Can we please see more of them soon, pleeeaaaase?! Actually, I’d love to see more of the ocean-dwelling Others in general. Sharkgard, yes! And I’m very curious about the Lake and Ocean elementals.

If you haven’t read this series yet, WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?! Get on that. Asap.

  1. My best friend is the biggest Anne Bishop fan there is and she is constantly bugging me to read her books. I actually got this one on Netgalley especially for her. :) She read and reviewed it for me.

  2. I got this book for review as well, my review will be up later though. I definitely agree with you! If you haven’t read this series, WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?

Meg and Simon are probably my favorite “couple” ever. And they aren’t even one… I just love them together, their friendship is so unique and amazing!

And I’m so excited to find out more about all the other Others -other Others? that looks weird- like the Orcasgard and Sharksgard and the other Elementals. Like how many elementals are there? I LOVE IT.

    Great review!

  3. I need to get a move on with this series! I had a false start with it on audio and, despite the popularity, it didn’t work for me. So I have a copy in hard cover waiting for me of the first book. Its loved by like EVERYONE so I’m eager to try again. Especially since you love the characters so much – I’m about the characters more than the plot most the time. And that was what was working best for me when I was listening. So I’m optimistic! Great review :)

  4. SHIP SHIP SHIP. Okay, please, they have so TOTALLY crossed that line. :P Okay, maybe not physically, but Simon is so in love with her it’s adorable. <3
I'm reading this one this week and can't wait! These characters are truly special. Lovely review, Jess!
