Nadia lives in the city of Canaan, where life is safe and structured, hemmed in by white stone walls and no memory of what came before. But every twelve years the city descends into the bloody chaos of the Forgetting, a day of no remorse, when each person's memories – of parents, children, love, life, and self – are lost. Unless they have been written.

In Canaan, your book is your truth and your identity, and Nadia knows exactly who hasn't written the truth. Because Nadia is the only person in Canaan who has never forgotten.

But when Nadia begins to use her memories to solve the mysteries of Canaan, she discovers truths about herself and Gray, the handsome glassblower, that will change her world forever. As the anarchy of the Forgetting approaches, Nadia and Gray must stop an unseen enemy that threatens both their city and their own existence – before the people can forget the truth. And before Gray can forget her.

My thoughts

WHY did I wait so long to read this?! This book was awesome! It’s been on my TBR for years, and it even popped up in my 5 star predictions one year. And I just…never read it. I suck, clearly. Because WOW this book took me by surprise!

The concept is so awesome and entirely unique. Every twelve years this mysterious “Forgetting” comes around and takes away everyone’s memories? So. Cool. And they carry around books with their memories to help them remember, and the books are basically sacred. I’ve never read anything like it! I was captivated from the very first page because the premise is so intriguing. The pacing is also quite fast. It keeps you turning pages and wanting more, which makes for a quick and easy read!

I loved the twist at the end, and how all of the relationships and secrets tie in together! This book reminded me a little of the movie The Happening mixed with The 100, with a sprinkle of Dustborn by Erin Bowman. It’s hard to talk about anything else without spoiling it for anyone who hasn’t read it, so I’m going to put the rest in spoiler tags! View Spoiler »

  1. I’m glad I’m not the only one who’s had this book for years! I’ve owned it since at least 2016 (I may have gotten it at a book conference as an ARC though…) and still haven’t read it. Glad to know it was so good, might be the kick in the pants I need to start it this year! Great review (I didn’t read the spoilers)
