Zombies stalk the night. Forget blood and brains. These monsters hunger for human souls. Sadly, they've got mine...
Alice Bell has lost so much. Family. Friends. A home. She thought she had nothing else to give. She was wrong.
After a new zombie attack, strange things begin to happen to her. Mirrors come to life, and the whispers of the dead assault her ears. But the worst? A terrible darkness blooms inside her, urging her to do very wicked things.
She's never needed her team of zombie slayers more, but ultra bad-boy Cole Holland, the leader and her boyfriend, suddenly withdraws from her...from everyone. Now, with her best friend Kat at her side, Ali must kill the zombies, uncover Cole's secret and learn to fight the darkness.
But the clock is ticking...and if she fails at a single task, they're all doomed.

My thoughts

My major issue with this book was with Cole and Ali’s relationship. It was so hot and cold that I got mental whiplash! I mean, the breakup part of it was very realistic. Having just gone through a breakup myself, it made me sick to my stomach to read it, because I knew what Ali was feeling. But sometimes they were so ridiculous I wanted to bash their heads together! I couldn’t see any real reason for the way Cole was acting. I kinda wanted to slap the shit out of him.

I enjoyed the way everything play out in this one, especially Ali’s internal struggle with Zombie Alice and the visions associated with it. The way the visions happened proves that things aren’t always the way they appear! (See, Cole, you were being stupid.)

Also, can we please talk about how amazing Kat is?!

“You’re my friend,” she said. “That means something to me.”
“Yes, but why do you like me?” I asked. “I’m nothing special.”
“Nothing special? Everyone makes fun of love at first sight, but, Ali, that’s what I felt for you. Love, not like. You’re the sister I never had, but always wanted.”

I LOVE KAT. SO FREAKING HARD. She’s seriously one of my favorite sidekick characters ever!! I wish she was real so that we could be friends! I loved how she stuck by Ali’s side no matter what, even when everyone else was condemning her. Even when things were bleak. She is exactly what a real friend should be, and I think there needs to be more of that kind of friendship in YA books! View Spoiler »

I loved seeing more into the world in the second installment. I got a better feel for the spirit realm and what the slayers go through. I love love looove the world in this series! Gena Showalter has a way of painting a vivid picture, while making it unique enough to stand out from the sea of other paranormal books. I’m very excited to see where the series goes in the third book!

Favorite quotes

Put your hope in the right thing, and it would be a lifeline. Put your hope in the wrong thing, and it would be a noose.

“When Ali Bell gives you the finger, she’s telling you how many seconds you have left to live.”

“There used to be a street named after Ali Bell, but it was changed because nobody crosses Ali Bell and lives.”

“I heard Ali Bell once got bitten by a rattlesnake, but after three days of pain and agony, the rattlesnake died.”

“I heard that when Ali Bell wants to laugh, she reads the Guinness Book of World Records.”

  1. I hate that I didn’t enjoy this novel as much as other people did, and that the series just went downhill for me, BUT, I have to agree with you Jessi, I LOVED Kat, I think she was without a doubt one of my favourite parts of this series, and the actual premise in this installment, the whole zombie inside her, it was pretty cool, it’s just a shame the whole romance just didn’t work for me.. Hope you like the last installment Jessi! :D

  3. This is actually the first time I read a review for this series. I wanted to buy it because the covers and titles are very eye-catching but now having read this, I want it even more! I’m very tempted on hitting that “view spoiler”…. Trying to contain myself is rather hard. I need to give this a try for sure! Lovely review!
