Elizabeth Caldwell doesn’t feel emotions . . . she sees them. Longing, Shame, and Courage materialize around her classmates. Fury and Resentment appear in her dysfunctional home. They’ve all given up on Elizabeth because she doesn’t succumb to their touch. All, that is, save one—Fear. He’s intrigued by her, as desperate to understand the accident that changed Elizabeth’s life as she is herself.

Elizabeth and Fear both sense that the key to her past is hidden in the dream paintings she hides in the family barn. But a shadowy menace has begun to stalk her, and try as she might, Elizabeth can barely avoid the brutality of her life long enough to uncover the truth about herself. When it matters most, will she be able to rely on Fear to save her?

My thoughts

First of all, the idea for this book is brilliant! Emotions are people? Yes please!! And our main character couldn’t feel any of them. It was kind of strange at times, because emotions are so natural that it was hard to imagine not feeling any at all. The only problem with that was, there were times when it should have been a very emotional scene; yet because Liz didn’t feel anything, neither did I. She was an emotional robot.

I loved the Emotions! They each had their own personality and came in human form, even though they weren’t actually human. Like I said, BRILLIANT. I adored Courage; I was really intrigued by him and I would have loved to see more of him! Nightmare was terrifying and sinister; the perfect villain. Even the fleeting moments with other Emotions like Guilt, Joy, and Longing were awesome. I have to give Sutton some major credit for originality, because this one was unlike anything I’ve ever read before!

“I didn’t invite you here, freak,” she hisses at me. “If you don’t leave, I’m going to kick your ass.”
“You can try.” I don’t back down
Fear laughs. “Hit her. I dare you,” he says to me.

FEAR. OHHHH FEAR. Ahhhhh!!! I love him so! He was dark and twisted because of who he was, but he clearly cared about Liz and was protective of her. He was totally swoon-worthy, and my favorite scenes were ones with him in it. When he wasn’t around, I wanted more of him! He has officially landed in my top Book Boyfriends. Can we please have a sequel with more Fear, or a novella about Fear? Please, Kelsey? Pleeeeaaaassse?!?! *cue desperate fangirling*

I just wanted to go to…some quiet place. To forget. To be someone else.

The plot in this story was amazing! The purpose behind everything, and Elizabeth’s past….wow. Seriously, I can’t say it enough: Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant! There’s a certain mystery in the first half because you have NO clue what happened and why Liz keeps seeing the boy. I just love the way everything played out in the end!

The only complaint I had about this one is that it kept telling me something wasn’t right. After noticing it more than a few times, I started highlighting them. I found many, such as ‘Something isn’t right,’ ‘I know something is wrong,’ and ‘..still sensing something…off.’ Don’t tell me, show me!

I would definitely recommend this book to paranormal and fantasy fans, and I’m really hoping to see more of Kelsey Sutton’s work in the future!

quotes

I wonder if anyone is really capable of change. Or are we only lying to ourselves, believing in something different, something more?

It’s the way of humanity, after all, to deny. To hope when there is none.

If we don’t take any risks, then we won’t find the things worth living for.

  1. Ohh awesome review! I’ve seen a few iffy reviews of this book so I’m THRILLED to see that you loved it! Maybe I’ll give it a read. It definitely sounds like a cool (and unique!) idea!

  2. What.a.cover.
It’s gorgeously dark and very interesting!I would love to have this on my bookshelf *sigh* Must get it.
Some quiet place sounds really good, definitely a one of a kind read, and emotions huh? Why hasn’t anyone tackled this before? It’s GENIUS. I already love Fear. ;)
But… is this a stand-alone? like stand-alones, but when I really love a book, I just can’t get enough of it. We need more! Hahah thanks for the review!

    • No it’s not! I totally forgot to put the series in my review, thanks for catching that :)
Book #2, Where Silence Gathers, is set to release July 2014 – so far away!

  3. Man, I am starting to regret letting my e-galley expire, Jessi! This one sounds so unique and good. Plus the way you talk about Fear…MUST read this one. I love the idea of her seeing emotions and them being REAL. That’s wicked cool. Great review!

  4. I’ve been going back & forth about this book because the concept seems really interesting but I wasn’t sure if it would work out well. I’m glad you liked it and think I’ll go ahead and give it a try one day.

Between the cover and the description of this one, my interest was piqued the first time I saw it, however, I have seen a couple reviews that have mentioned how they discussed a character with Autism and how they were not happy with it. As someone who works in special education, this has me concerned. Did you notice anything?

    • There was indeed a character with autism, but the parts were rather small. The lead character stands up for her and helps her…I didn’t see any problems with it but I honestly don’t know much in depth about the mannerisms of someone with autism, so I couldn’t tell you how accurate they are. But it seemed fine to me!
