Meet Millie!

I’m Millie Dixon from Millie D’s Words and I’m pretty much the epitome of a geek. I get super excited over science and history stuff and I love superheroes. I’m a student and I live in southern New Jersey with four adorable kitties and my bookshelf. Obviously, since I host a book blog, I’m a book nerd, too. I can’t get enough of books. I also do normal human things. And I’m a Twitter addict, too. I will almost immediately respond to your tweet. No joke.

How long have you been blogging? What made you want to start a book blog?

I’ve been blogging for nine months now and I blame the creation of my blog on peer pressure. You see, I went to a local Breathless Reads event earlier in the year and I told Jessica Spotswood how much I’m following author blogs and such and she was like ‘Oh, what’s your blog?’ But I didn’t actually have one! So when I got home that night, Millie D’s Words was born.

What do you do when you’re not blogging or reading?

If I’m not blogging or reading, I’m hiking or tanning on the beach, singing, dancing, or acting, daydreaming, perfecting the use of my less dominant hand (which is not going out as well as I’ve thought it would), burying myself in homework, and being my natural weird self.

What is your favorite part about blogging? Least favorite?

My favorite part of blogging, I think, is when I get to meet all these awesome bloggers and talk to them and fangirl. Honestly, I think I do more socializing on my computer than I do in the real world. My least favorite part of blogging would have to be writing a bad review. I’m a person who’ll speak truthfully about things and my opinion, but there’s something about giving a bad review . . . It makes my heart sad.

How did you come up with the name for your blog?

Long story short, I was taking an algebra exam and was fantasizing about getting published and I was contemplating on using my real name or a pen name. If I were to use a pen name, I wanted it to be cute, so I thought back to awesome authors and Elizabeth Dickinson was sticking in my head. I turned it around a few times and–presto! I came up with Millie Dixon. Yes, Millie is not my real name. Fast forward to the night I made my blog, and I wanted my blog name to be cute and original, and so Millie D’s Words was made.

Do you have any specific book bloggers that inspire you?

Ah! I can’t tell you how many bloggers inspire me. Giselle from Xpresso Reads, Anna from Literary Exploration, Jenna from Making the Grade, Katie from Blook Girl, and so many more! They just . . . rock. They’re so amazing.

What do you look for in a blog when following? What are your pet peeves?

When I’m visiting a blog, there’s certainly a few things that I am looking for. For one, I’m looking for a Reviews page. It’s so much more convenient when all of the reviews from the blog are all listed, especially in alphabetical order. Also, I’m hoping that the blog looks respectively nice. I’m looking to see that I can read the text and that it’s organized. I cannot stand when the blog looks disorganized or I can’t read the text. And I’m also looking to see that the reviews are good reviews. I’m not a fan of grammatical-ridden reviews. There’s a difference between typos and just not reading over the review.

[Jessi] Grammatical errors are a pet peeve of mine, too! Drives me CRAZY.

What’s your favorite book(s)?

I’m so glad you put a parenthesized ‘s’ at the end of books there. I’m not sure I could tell you what my favorite book is. The Girl in the Steel Corset by Kady Cross is certainly one of my favorites. Umm, there’s pretty much every book ever written by Jullie Kagawa and Andrea Cremer. My new favorite is The Diviners by Libba Bray. My goodness, it was the bee’s knees.

Favorite author?

Lauren Oliver.

What is the biggest turn off for you when you’re reading a book?

Amateur writing is a big turn-off for me. So is the scant or nonexistent use of imagery. Lastly, incorrect history gets on my nerves, too. If I’m reading something historical, it better have the right history in it, or I get a little upset. Why take on a historical if you don’t know the time period you’re even writing in.

What first draws you to a book to make you want to read it?

Alas, I’m a cover-judger. I have his philosophy to give all books a fair chance, but if one pretty has a shiny and new cover, I’ll read that one first.

Awkward. Short. Bookish.

Name a random fact about yourself.

I try to tell myself that I’m not technologically inclined, but that’s a lie. I’m not sure why I’ve been trying to convince myself that.

Do you have a job? If so, what do you do?

No job, alas.

What did you want to be when you were little? Has that changed?

When I was little, I wanted to be a lot of things. For a while, I wanted to be a celebrity just because they made a lot of money. I wanted to be the first female president for a while somewhere and I wanted to be an archaeologist because I used to watch a lot of Egyptian tomb excavation shows on the discovery channel. Then I wanted to be a vet because I love animals, but then that changed when I learned that I’d have to euthanize them and stuff. In all, my career dream has changed. I aspire to be an anthropologist and author.
