Don’t look at Them. Never let Them know you can see Them.

That is Ethan Chase’s unbreakable rule. Until the fey he avoids at all costs—including his reputation—begin to disappear, and Ethan is attacked. Now he must change the rules to protect his family. To save a girl he never thought he’d dare to fall for.

Ethan thought he had protected himself from his older sister’s world—the land of Faery. His previous time in the Iron Realm left him with nothing but fear and disgust for the world Meghan Chase has made her home, a land of myth and talking cats, of magic and seductive enemies. But when destiny comes for Ethan, there is no escape from a danger long, long forgotten.

My thoughts

Once you see Them, they’ll never leave you alone. They’ll never let you go.

First of all, I absolutely LOVE anything Iron Fey. And while this was technically a different series, it still had all the characters that I fell in love with in the original series. It was so exciting waiting for them all to make an appearance! They didn’t have much of a part, as it is a story primarily about Ethan, but it was enough for me! Although, the original characters weren’t really explained a lot, so if you haven’t read the first series, you may not really understand them or their importance. So, before reading this, read The Iron Fey first!

I enjoyed getting to know Ethan. He acted like a bit of an asshat, but he had clear reasons for doing so. He was defensive and angry, and overall prickly, but he put up the walls as protection because of the things he’d seen and been through.
I loved the development between Ethan and Kenzie. She was able to get past those walls he’d constructed so carefully. Things moved slowly between them, so it was a very convincing romance with that slow burn that I love so much.
No instaluv here, folks! (Thank heavens)

Let’s just take a moment to appreciate Grim. Because, if you don’t know by now, I am a crazy cat lady, so I have a big adoration for him just for being a cat. But it’s so much more than that. He’s amazing! I love the way he talks, his cool and aloof demeanor…he’s just the perfect portrayal of a cat! I want to snatch him up and squeeze him to my bosom (even as he tries to scratch my eyeballs out). *crazed fan girl squee*
And I love how he always uses the excuse ‘Because I am a cat.’ It explains EVERYTHING.

It was great to meet Keirran (wasn’t it spelled Kierran in Iron Knight?), and I was thrilled when I saw his name pop up. If you read Iron Knight, you already know who he is. I don’t want to spoil it for those of you who haven’t, though. But I was wondering when he was going to spill the beans about his identity! I liked him a lot and want to see more of him!

While I loved this one – because Julie is a positively brilliant and talented writer, and I love all things Iron Fey – it didn’t quite compare to The Iron Knight for me. I found myself a little disappointed with Ethan. Probably because he could never compare to Ash’s swoonworthy epicness of awesome. I think Ash just set the bar too high for poor Ethan to reach >.<

You can’t trust the fey, ever. They’ll pretend to be your friend and stab you in the back when it’s most convenient, not because they’re mean, or spiteful, or hateful, but because it’s their nature. It’s just how they are.

There was also lack of action with the fey. That quote portrays how they are, but there wasn’t really much of the stabbing going on. The only danger was from the new creepy non-corporeal fae, and those parts were few and far between. I would have liked to have a few more heart pounding, edge-of-your-seat moments. But again, still amazing!

My only other complaint? Kenzie’s overuse of the term ‘tough guy.’ After the first 20 times, it got on my nerves a bit.

Side note: I still want a glider.

I want to know what it was that everyone was hiding from Ethan! That was driving me crazy, and it wasn’t resolved. I can’t wait for The Traitor Son…why is 2013 so far away?!

Favorite character: Grimalkin. Duh. Forever and for always ♥

quotes
“It’s kind of silly to tell the talking cat he doesn’t exist when he’s sitting right there arguing with you.”

“Maybe we should drop in and introduce ourselves, ice-boy. Do the whole, hey, we were just in the neighborhood, and we were just wondering if you had any plans to take over the Nevernever. Have a fruit basket.”
I’ll give you two guesses who said that. ;D
