Your greatest enemy isn't what you fight, but what you fear.

Elizabeth Grey is one of the king's best witch hunters, devoted to rooting out witchcraft and doling out justice. But when she's accused of being a witch herself, Elizabeth is arrested and sentenced to burn at the stake.

Salvation comes from a man she thought was her enemy. Nicholas Perevil, the most powerful and dangerous wizard in the kingdom, offers her a deal: he will save her from execution if she can break the deadly curse that's been laid upon him.

But Nicholas and his followers know nothing of Elizabeth's witch hunting past--if they find out, the stake will be the least of her worries. And as she's thrust into the magical world of witches, ghosts, pirates, and one all-too-handsome healer, Elizabeth is forced to redefine her ideas of right and wrong, of friends and enemies, and of love and hate.

My thoughts

I was really impressed with Virginia Boecker’s prose. It was engaging, so even when there was a lull in the plot or action, I was still interested in the story!

I freaking loved George! He cracked me up! I was really hoping in the beginning that he was going to be the love interest. (*sighs wistfully*) I also really liked Fifer! She was feisty, and even though she came off as a hard ass (or worse), she totally won me over by the end of the book. You come to realize that she acts tough, but she has good intentions (not to mention spunk in bounds)! I actually kind of wish that Fifer and George had been the main characters! Elizabeth and John were kind of just there for me, though. I wasn’t really sold on their romance because I was too focused on George, haha.

The major complaint I have with this book is that I didn’t connect as well as I’d hoped. It lacked the feeling for me that I was hoping for. Which is sad, because it really was a great story! I loved the world that Boecker painted, concept was cool! Fifer’s knots were totally awesome, and so was the explanation of the symbol (the front cover)!

I don’t have much else to say about this book other than I enjoyed it and that you should read it, too!
