The Virals are put to the ultimate test when they find a geocache containing an ornate puzzle box. Shelton decodes the cipher inside, only to find more tantalizing clues left by "The Gamemaster." A second, greater geocache is within reach—if the Virals are up to the challenge.

But the hunt takes a dark turn when Tory locates the other box—a fake bomb, along with a sinister proposal from The Gamemaster. Now, the real game has begun: another bomb is out there—a real one—and the clock is ticking.

My thoughts

I knew going in that I would enjoy this: Anything Virals is sure to be fun and action-packed. This one was no disappointment!

Tory is the same kick-ass leader that I loved in the first two books. She fights for what she believes in and doesn’t give up! I like the whole ragtag pack; nerdy and practical Shelton, enthusiastic Hi, stoic Ben (who kinda disappointed me at one point), and even the adorable furry Coop. They each had their own personality and felt pretty realistic.

I love anything that involves solving a puzzle. And hey, I admit, I didn’t figure any of them out. But it was still exciting! (Not quite as exciting as pirates, though…) The Gamemaster’s challenge was insane! Clue after clue, and the stakes got higher and higher with each one. It kinda reminded me a little bit of Untraceable. The guy was a psycho!

I think my favorite parts of these books are the parts where the Virals are ‘flaring’ – aka using their wolfish abilities (usually to solve mysteries). They aren’t werewolves, they just have heightened senses from the experimental Parvovirus altering their DNA. Speaking of which, I’m very excited to find some answers on the mutation in the next book!

I honestly don’t have much else to say other than ‘I enjoyed it,’ but I would definitely recommend this series to adventure fans. Seizure still remains my favorite Virals novel, though! (Who doesn’t love a good pirate treasure map story?!)

  1. Fanastic review, Jessi! Tory sounds so strong and this series looks really intriguing I’m excited to possibly start this one to see what this series is all about the wolfish abilities bit sounds awesome! I’m glad you really liked this one :)

  2. I know what my friend is a huge fan of this series and I think I recall her ranting about the cover changes suck, and now that I see them for myself- yes. They’re horrifyingly horrid compared to the old ones. :( At least you found this enjoyable and filled with action. ^,^

    Lovely review, Jessi! <33
