4.5 Stars

The heart-stopping first chapter in bestselling author Jessica Shirvington's Disruption series. What if a microchip could identify your perfect match? What if it could be used against you and the ones you love? Eight years ago, Mercer Corporation's M-Bands became mandatory. An evolution of the smartphone, the bracelets promised an easier life. Instead, they have come to control it. Two years ago, Maggie Stevens watched helplessly as one of the people she loved most was taken from her, shattering her world as she knew it. Now, Maggie is ready. And Quentin Mercer - heir to the M-Corp empire - has become key to Maggie's plan. But as the pieces of her dangerous design fall into place, could Quentin's involvement destroy everything she's fought for? In a world full of broken promises, the ones Maggie must keep could be the most heartbreaking.

My thoughts

Wow! I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. I loooved all the cool science-y tech involved! The concept of the pheromone technology was super awesome! Kinda scary, actually, seeing as how it’s not all that far-fetched. Everyone became so dependent on the Phera-tech that they no longer followed their hearts. I can’t imagine how horrible it would be to pair yourself with someone based solely on what a piece of machinery tells you, and not because you actually loved them.

I flipping loved Maggie. She was such a relatable character for me because literally everything she does is for one reason and one reason only: to find her dad. If I were in her situation, I have no doubt I’d do anything and everything I had to, just like she did, in order to find my own dad. This made me connect with her in a way that I don’t connect to many protags. She was hardcore, too. She wasn’t a bad person, but she did unspeakable things to further her own agenda. She used people. Lied, manipulated, blackmailed, stole, and all kinds of other law-breaking. All to get to her father. She was calculated and ruthless when she had to be, but her intentions were pure. Everything she did was out of love for her father. Her desire to find him was the driving point of this novel, and partially what made me love it so much. Because I can relate to that on a cellular level. View Spoiler »

The world is brilliant! I’ll admit I was overwhelmed at first. I didn’t understand the concept of the Phera-tech and how the pairing worked. But once I finally wrapped my mind around it, I was hooked! This novel is very engaging. And something that I loved about it is that it felt so real. This book is very convincing and cinematic! The concept of disruption was SO. COOL. Actually, most of the tech was super intriguing. There’s no cash anymore, everyone just gets a banking zip where their money is uploaded to. This book was very unique!

Despite not being a fan of romance, I actually kind of loved the chemistry between Maggie and Quentin. I love that it starts as an unhappy alliance and slowly, even grudgingly, develops into more. I absolutely LOVE those types of romances! No instalove here, folks! Actually, Quentin totally had me swooning there toward the end *heart eyes* View Spoiler »

Talk about a crazy cliffhanger! The ending left me wanting more! Actually, I’m having trouble getting my hands on a copy of the second book. Despite being previously published (this is a re-publish, I guess??), I can’t find a hard copy ANYWHERE. *rips out hair* The only thing I found was an audio on CD. But I heard from Cait @ Paper Fury that the audio of the first book was pretty good, so I might get it anyway!

Favorite quotes

Give me a real fight any day, but girls? Girls I could do without.
Haha, I love her!

“I love you. Madly, crazy beyond compare. I feel like I can’t breathe without you, never want to lose you, would run with you, kill for you, die for you, love you.”
FEELS FEELS FEELS.

This book sounds great! Kind of reminds me of Delirium in the sense that those in power use science to determine who’s going to end up with who and that love doesn’t matter.

  2. THIS BOOK IS BASICALLY MY LIFE OMG. And yes! I entirely attest to the audiobook’s goodness, like, Ill just attest again because I feel like shrieking about it. Although I listened to bk 1 on audio and then read bk 2 because my library is a weirdo and doesn’t do things consistently, sheesh. AHEM. But I absolutely adored Quentin and Maggie too. <3 Like they have to be one of my top OTPs of ever?!? And Maggie honestly did awful things and I loved her for it. I'm messed up probably. Let's not talk about that. :')
THAT PLOT TWIST AT THE END WITH HER DAD THOUGH. (!!!!!!!!)
And also Maggie's thing about junk food = a thing of true glorious beauty.

not fair! Based on your review I have another book I have to read. I love characters like this mostly because I can imagine they are me. I’m not sure if I could ever do these things you mentioned, but I can vicariously through this girl.
