The last thing Dawson Black expected was Bethany Williams. As a Luxen, an alien life form on Earth, human girls are…well, fun. But since the Luxen have to keep their true identities a secret, falling for one would be insane.

Dangerous. Tempting. Undeniable.

Bethany can’t deny the immediate connection between her and Dawson. And even though boys aren’t a complication she wants, she can’t stay away from him. Still, whenever they lock eyes, she’s drawn in.

Captivated. Lured. Loved.

Dawson is keeping a secret that will change her existence...and put her life in jeopardy. But even he can’t stop risking everything for one human girl. Or from a fate that is as unavoidable as love itself.

My thoughts

Sigh. I feel like it makes me a leper for saying this, but I wasn’t impressed with this one. Let me just say right now, I absolutely LOVED Obsidian. It’s on my favorites shelf. So, I was quite dismayed when this one just didn’t cut it for me.

My main issue is that I’m so ridiculously sick of “immediate connections.” There’s no such thing as love at first sight; that’s called LUST people!! Ugh. The use of the L word in this one made me cringe. It happened too fast and felt forced and unnatural. I understand that it’s a short story and there wasn’t much time, but still. Everything was rushed. I think it could have been made into a full novel to give a little more time for everything. But that’s just my opinion.

All in all, Shadows was just too gooey and lovey-dovey for me. It was nice to still get my Daemon fix, but I really missed the love/hate relationship that he and Katy shared. There was no slow burn between Dawson and Bethany. It was like, Hi, you’re hot, I love you. That’s what it felt like for me. Dawson wasn’t even really a convincing character, he just seemed like every girl’s fantasy personified. He was too perfect: totally sexy, soft and sweet, protective, and a complete gentleman. Yep, that’s definitely woman-made. He just didn’t compare to Daemon for me!

Favorite character: Daemon. Duh. The only thing I liked about Dawson was the fact that he has a Jetta (like me!!) :p

quotesAsh twisted toward Daemon, her cheeks flushed. “I can’t believe you’re allowing him to do this. Next thing we know, you’ll be dating a human.”
Daemon busted out laughing. “Yeah, not going to happen.”
I just got a kick out of that! :D

assessment

Plot: 3/5
Writing style: 4/5
It did still have the snark that I loved so much in Obsidian.
Characters: 2.5/5
Those 2.5 stars are for Daemon. Dawson gets zero…
Pace: 3.5/5
Cover: 4.5/5

Overall rating: 3/5 starfish
Not what I was hoping for, but still a decent read.

  1. Aw, that’s disappointing. :( I bought Shadows when it came out, just haven’t had the time to read it yet. Since I loved Obsidian too, I really wanted something else to keep be going until Onyx comes out. I’m sad that you didn’t like it as much. Still, great review.

Sucks that Dawson doesn’t compare to Daemon either! Lol.
