I am THRILLED to announce that I am finally bringing back Horror October! This is my second time hosting – it used to be hosted by Oh, the Books! and when they quit hosting, I picked it up in 2016. Sadly I missed it last year. I let the blog slip away in 2017 and I really want to get back into doing the things that I loved to do before. This was one of them! I SO miss focusing on Halloween and all things horror for October. So, get ready for a spooktacular celebration of my favorite month of the year!
What is Horror October?
For those of you who don’t know what Horror October is, it’s a full month of celebrating Halloween and everything horror! If you want to participate, you can do whatever you like and post as often as you’d like. I personally try to read as many horror books and watch as many horror movies as I can. This year I have a lot of fun things planned, and I’m also bringing Horror October to bookstagram as well!
What you can expect to see
- Some horror book reviews, with special ‘horror factor’ ratings
- A horror movie review/discussion or two
- Some Halloween themed mini-challenges
- A readathon!!!
- A bookstagram photo challenge
- A GIVEAWAY! (*coughs* bribe)
That’s all I’ve got for now. I’m going to try to come up with some more things, but I am totally open to suggestions!!
And again, you can do whatever you’d like to do! Other than following giveaway rules if you want to enter, you can do with you want with it. You’re welcome to do your own Halloween-esque ideas!
In addition to the blog festivities, I’m hosting a two part event on bookstagram with a giveaway! It’s open internationally – one winner will get any book of their choice from the Book Depository (up to $15), AND in addition to that US entrants also get the option to choose a signed, personalized copy for me to get signed at YALLfest (see IG post for more details). Bloggers are welcome to enter, too – each blog post linked to the wrap-up linkies gets you an entry into the giveaway. I’ll have check-ins probably at the halfway mark and the end of the month with the linkies for you to add your posts to. Blog posts can be anything Halloween related that you want to do, you don’t have to follow the mini challenges!
Entries will be counted by each post, so one entry per each post with the hashtag (IG and Twitter) as well as each post entered into the linky. You must also be following me on the platform you’re entering from for your entries to count.
Photo Challenge & readathon
There’s more details on the Instagram post, but basically you just follow along with the photo prompts for each corresponding day and make sure to tag them with #HorrorOctober18! (You can post at your convenience throughout the month if you want, too.)
After the photo challenge ends, the readathon begins! The readathon also lasts for two weeks, ending on Sunday the 28th. So get ready to get your spooky reading in! You can also get entries into the giveaway for each book you finish for the readathon: for a book you’ve read to count, you must post about it – one post PER BOOK you finish, with the hashtag #horroroctober18, tagging me in the caption and stating that you read it for the readathon. (If you’re on twitter just use the hashtag and tag @novelheartbeat)
These can be posted at any time during the week of each respective challenge (Monday to Sunday). You can post on your blog, twitter, or bookstagram; just make sure to use the tag on photos! Deadline for mini challenge entries for the week is each Sunday.
- Week one – Pumpkin challenge: Carve a pumpkin and show it off! Bonus entry in the giveaway if it’s a bookish pumpkin ;)
- Week two – Recipe challenge: Post your favorite fall or Halloween themed recipe
- Week three – Movie challenge: Watch a horror movie you’ve never seen before (then tell us about it!)
- Week two – Costume challenge: Dress up as a bookish character (and show us a photo of course!)
Books I plan to read
I will be counting sign up posts as one entry into the giveaway. If you link your blog and not your sign up post, it will not count.
