Odea Donahue has been able to travel through people’s dreams since she was six years old. Her mother taught her the three rules of walking: Never interfere. Never be seen. Never walk the same person’s dream more than once. Dea has never questioned her mother, not about the rules, not about the clocks or the mirrors, not about moving from place to place to be one step ahead of the unseen monsters that Dea’s mother is certain are right behind them.

Then a mysterious new boy, Connor, comes to town and Dea finally starts to feel normal. As Connor breaks down the walls that she’s had up for so long, he gets closer to learning her secret. For the first time she wonders if that’s so bad. But when Dea breaks the rules, the boundary between worlds begins to deteriorate. How can she know what’s real and what’s not?

My thoughts

Despite the fact that parts of this felt like they were ripped off of Inception, I rather enjoyed this story! I love how twisted and dark the dream world was. That was by far my favorite part. There wasn’t much happening in Dea’s ordinary waking life, but somehow I never lost interest. The little snippets of the dream world were enough to keep me going! It was so twisted, and I love that.

I found the world of dreams to be very intriguing! I thought it was cool that they had their own city and their own king. View Spoiler »

The underlying murder mystery in this book was unexpected, but it was interesting to see all the pieces fall together.

I don’t have much else to say about this book other than the fact that I enjoyed it. It’s one of those for me where you enjoy it while you read it and then forget about it when you’re done. Already the details of this story are starting to fade. But like I said, I absolutely loved the twisted side this story had, and that is what would make me recommend it to anyone else who loves things a little on the dark side!

Favorite quote

Maybe everyone was walking around carrying ugly monsters and dark little corners, nightmares and broken pasts.
