Once again I don’t have a Monday review (damn PTBD), so today I’m going to talk about series.
I am afraid of series.
Why? I’m not particularly sure. With really good books, perhaps I’m afraid that the second book won’t compare to the first. With last books, perhaps I’m afraid to end the series. But I’m pretty sure it’s a commitment issue for me. I tend to read the first book and never continue! It’s not necessarily that I don’t want to read it, I just…don’t read it. Sometimes I procrastinate for months, even years, before getting around to the second book. Then I wish I had read it sooner! Does anybody else do this?!
Recently I got the idea from Mel @ The Daily Prophecy to track the series I’ve started. It’s not pretty, let me assure you. I’ve compiled a list for you guys!
Summary
Completely finished series: 14
Series I need to finish (all books published): 22
Series I need to catch up on (unread published books, unfinished series): 27
Series I’m caught up on (have books unpublished yet): 37
Series I don’t plan to finish: 26
That’s a total of 126 series I’ve started, and I’ve only finished fourteen of them. This is very sad, you guys.

None of these lists include novellas, which I am seriously behind on. I’ve probably only read 3 novellas, ever…
So what do your guys’ series stats look like? Are you good about finishing series?
I have the same problem! I start series and then for one reason or another I just don’t finish them. For a lot of them I have no excuse either, the next or final book in the series is on my shelf I just haven’t gotten to it yet. Hopefully we can both curb this problem =P
I do that too! There’s quite a few of those on that list that I actually have, but they’ve been sitting on my shelf for months and months! We really do need to fix it >.<
I started keeping track of my series in a secret GR group and kind of stopped because it was getting insane. I’ve started way more series than you, and have only finished a few of them. I just can’t stop starting new series!!!
Perhaps I should finish seeing which series I need to finish and make a plan to catch up…
There’s so many interesting debuts that it’s hard to stay away! I need to change the sequel challenge to a ‘series knockout’ challenge lol!
That is a challenge I would definitely join! My TBR needs it!
I’m pathetic at finishing a series too, I REALLY need to get around to reading those last few books! ;)
Series are tough. A lot happens between when you finish a book and when the next one gets published. There are always so many books to be read and so many reasons to put off reading the next, or the last in a series. I may like the first book and then just forget about the series by the time the second one comes out. By then, I try to just read them all in a row and be done with it.
Ahhhhh, I love seeing this. Making lists is something I love to do and we can support each other in our battle against series ;) I’m actually planning to make my ‘tackling series’ a monthly event, so I’m pretty motivated to finish some series to show off :p
I was planning to start ‘series I want to start’ but wow, that was even more depressing than series I need to finish. Not a good idea, haha.
I love this post and I think I might run out and tally up my series reads now LOL!
But seriously, I totally feel you. I did a similar post a few months back. When I read the first book I’m like, “OMG NEED BOOK 2 NOW!!” Then book 2 comes out and… I don’t read it. I have no idea why. I’m just not in the mood, or I’m afraid it won’t live up, or… I have no idea.
Maybe that’s why it’s often refreshing to just read a standalone.
My eyes completely popped out while reading this list. That’s so many series!
I should write a post of my own – I’m really interested to see how mines will look. Would it be as long as yours?
O.O This list makes me stress out. I mean, MINE IS PROBABLY JUST AS CRAYCRAY
You should make a list too!!
Okay, number 1)love the blog design!
number 2) I can SO relate!
In general, I like the idea of series. I hate saying goodbye to something, so a series where I can “grow” with the characters and meet them over and over again seems perfect to me.
In reality, I’m horrible at finishing series. I don’t know why. I’m not afraid of not liking the book or something. I just…procrastinate. Start a new series. Don’t read at all. I hate that! My tip would be to just pick one series, get into the mood for it and then devour it on a rainy weekend. Sometimes, this works for me.
Uh, not always, though.
Thank you! I procrastinate too…I’ve never tried to binge read a series, maybe I should do that! If I don’t read the second book directly after the first one, I’m likely to forget everything and then I don’t care much about reading book 2 >.<
Omigoodness … ME TOO! Well, you already know this because we’ve talked ;-) I actually made a list and posted it on my blog over the summer, but I LOVE your colour-coded list … I might just “borrow” the idea to plan out my reading list for next year’s challenge! There’s something about seeing my reading list in print that just motivates me to get going and finish some of those pending series, you know?
Haha yeah! And feel free to snag it ;)
Wow, what a great list! I’m glad Dakota Frost is on it.
I think you’ve got Skindancer listed as “only one book to be caught up” … I’m almost done with #3, LIQUID FIRE, but then I’ve got half of #4, SPECTRAL IRON, in the can.
So it might be more than one left. I’m not going to tell you how many books I’ve got planned – I want you to keep Dakota Frost in the “need to finish” category! :-)
-Anthony
Oh hi! It took me a minute to realize you were the author, lol! I don’t get many author comments, so thanks for stopping by :)
I have it as one book to be caught up because your others aren’t out yet, right? If I can finish Blood Rock, then all I have to do is wait for the others :D
I’m glad I’m not alone in the series problem :) I’ve never sat down and done the STATs, I’m kind of afraid too…
[…] Jessi admitted to having a series problem. […]
Holy, I am late to the party on this one, but this is a brilliant (and totally frightening). I bet my list is a scary beast. Now I think I will make it. Would you mind if I did a similar post (giving you credit of course)?
Sure thing! You should totally make one :)
[…] credits goes to Jessi from Novel Heartbeat for making the series list (finished series, series I need to finish, etc.) I based mines off of! […]
