Meet Judith!
Hi. My name is Judith and I’m not good at introductions. A little bit about myself? Well, okay. I’m 20 years old. I live in the Netherlands. I like to read – obviously. Always have, though I find myself thinking about books 90% a day since I started blogging. Before it was like 85%. Big change! Anyway, I do things when I don’t read, occasionally, like go to Uni (I study communication and linguistics) and work (as a web shop copywriter for a baby store) and spend many hours doing random things on the Internet. (No, I’m not creepy. Just bored.)

How long have you been blogging? What made you want to start a book blog?

I have been blogging since I was about fifteen years old, but I only started book blogging in August 2012. Weirdly, the idea of blogging about books had never crossed my mind before that, but when I stumbled across a few book blogs I was sold immediately. Books? Writing about books? Talking about books to people who love them just the same – a LOT? Yes, please!

What do you do when you’re not blogging or reading?

What makes me love blogging and reading is the listening to and telling of stories. I pretty much love every kind of storytelling: movies, music, TV shows, art… I’m a hopeless dreamer and I love getting lost in a different world, hence the love for stories. So um, that’s why I like creating things and photography and mindless wandering around the Internet.

What is your favorite part about blogging? Least favorite?

I love creating new content and graphics a whole lot, but I like the contact with other bloggers even more. I’ve only been blogging since August and I’ve already met amazing people and lovely friends. There is so much love here, and I don’t even care that makes me sound like a hippie. It’s so much fun.

On a less enthusiastic note, what I don’t like is the pressure that it makes me feel sometimes. Blogging isn’t my job, and I sometimes have to remind myself to treat it as such. Be a bit more relaxed about it ;)

[Jessi] I have the same problem!

Where did you come up with the name for your blog?

Trust me, you don’t want to know. I think I made a billion combinations of words I liked, just to see if they fit together. And that is what “Paper Riot” is: a combination of two words I like a lot. The only thing I wanted was a short name, one people can actually remember, and I think that worked out quite well!

[Jessi] It worked! I love love love your blog name :)

Do you have any specific book bloggers that inspire you?

I think what most inspires me is talking to blogging friends. Twitter and Gchat conversations are not just perfect for discussion books, but also result in the best ideas and most fun times on the blogosphere. This makes me even more determined to keep blogging.

What do you look for in a blog when following? What are your pet peeves?

That really depends on the blog: sometimes I love a blog for its brilliant discussion posts, and sometimes the blogger behind it is just an amazing person, or they have a very similar taste in books. Whatever it is, I want to follow blogs because I want to read them, not because I feel obligated to in any way!

As for the pet peeves… hating on a book I totally adored doesn’t help. But besides that, I’m a design freak. If a blog has TOO MUCH going on, and not in a good way, I get a little dizzy.

What’s your favorite book(s)?

Harry Potter, forever and always. The Hunger Games, because it’s awesome times a million. Looking for Alaska and The Fault in Our Stars by John Green, because it makes me bawl every time. Just One Day by Gayle Forman, because it has my favorite character growth of all time. Vampire Academy, which is my latest obsession and very awesome. Anna and the French Kiss, my favorite romance ever. (Do you want me to go on? Because I could.)

Favorite author?

John Green, who is made of awesome.

What is the biggest turn off for you when you’re reading a book?

Cliches, crappy romance and flat characters make me roll my eyes. But most of all: not feeling a story. The story could be really good, but if I don’t care if the main character jumps off a cliff, there is something missing.

What first draws you to a book to make you want to read it?

I’m a total cover snob! I’ve bought books because I love their covers, even if I don’t know what the book is about (looking at you, Sisters Red). Of course, I can look past the cover if the book is VERY good. But the cover is important.

Describe yourself in 3 words.

Story lover. Crafter. Dreamer.

Name a random fact about yourself.

I don’t like picking up the phone. Like, it seriously scares me. I also don’t like surprises, so… (random, right?)

[Jessi] DUDE me too! Everyone I tell about my phone-phobia always looks at me like I’ve sprouted another head. Finally, someone else gets it!

What did you want to be when you were little? Has that changed?

Except for my I-want-to-be-like-my-mom phase, where I wanted to be a teacher, I have always wanted to be a writer. And no, that hasn’t changed.

Randomness

 Cats or dogs?
I like both.

 Favorite animal?
Elephants! I love elephants. They’re probably scary as hell in real life, but I adore them.

 White, dark, or milk chocolate?
Dark.

 Coke or Pepsi?
I don’t care.

 Favorite TV show?
My current obsession is Veronica Mars. (Seriously, why have I never seen this show before?!) But I also love Sherlock, The Vampire Diaries, Pretty Little Liars, Game of Thrones, Friends, NYPB Blue, The Killing (the Danish version) and Borgen (also Danish).

 Movie?
I love all superhero movies. Well, almost all of them. And I like The Family Stone, The Lincoln Lawyer, The Shawshank Redemption, The Terminal. And Despicable Me.

 Color?
Red. Or blue. But not together.

Thanks for being here today, Judith! It was great getting to know you! :)

  1. YAY, thanks so much, Jessi! This was fun!! I have never met anyone else who doesn’t like picking up the phone either haha. Most people eh, they don’t get it ;)

  2. Yeeeey, Judith!

You know. I also have a crazy fear of picking up the phone :’) I even hate it when I need to phone someone I know. I just don’t like talking to someone through it. And woehoe, Despicable me is awesome! I also love the cover from Sisters red, but the book is also good. Jackson Pearce writes great retellings. Harry Potter <3 The fault in our stars <3 And oh, when I come on a new blog and I see a ranting review about a book I totally love.. I'm very inclined to click on the X in the right corner. My heart dies a little bit when someone hates my beloved book.

  3. OMG I SO agree with the phone phobia thing! Because this insurance company keeps CALLING me and going “You could go to jail because you haven’t been paying your taxes” and I’m like “I DON’T EVEN KNOW HOW TAXES WORK I’VE TOLD YOU LIKE FIVE TIMES THAT THIS IS THE WRONG NUMBER AND THAT I’VE HAD IT FOR LIKE FOUR YEARS OMG TAKE A CHILL PILL GUYS.”

Even though I’m obviously the one who needs a chill pill O_O Ooh dude I agree with all of your answers seriously! And is it true that an elephant is afraid of mice? I’m not even sure O_O

    Awesome interview guys!!
