Meet Dalene!

How long have you been blogging? What made you want to start a book blog?

I started blogging in January 2012. I did make a few posts in December, testing the waters, but officially January made a post several days a week and began participating in memes. I really wanted to share my thoughts about what I read with anyone and everyone. It’s fun recording what I’ve read and really write down the different thoughts I have.

What do you do when you’re not blogging or reading?

I work full-time in finance for a government agency. I am a mother of one. I help run a soccer team with my husband that keeps us busy in Spring and Fall. My daughter is also involved in the marching band and I help out there throughout the band season. I love to camp and ride four wheelers with my family during the summer.

What is your favorite part about blogging? Least favorite?

I love creating my posts and hope everyone enjoys reading them. I don’t have a very creative mind, but I do have enough creativity to be what I think is successful here. However, I know I still have a lot of room to grow. This first year has been tough as I’ve been creating and re-creating what it is I want for my readers.

Where did you come up with the name for your blog?

My nickname has always been Date and as I began pondering titles for the blog, I wasn’t happy with all the synonyms of reading, books, etc. and then it just popped in my head A Date with a Book that can be taken as spending time with a book or if you know me that it is me with a book.

Do you have any specific book bloggers that inspire you?

There are several bloggers out there that I have inspired my work as I still continue to create what I exactly want my blog to be. The first is Naida at …the bookworm… She is a constant commenter and while she might not know it I am inspired to be as supportive as she is. I also have been inspired by Kimba the Caffeinated Reader. What a fun blog! She is very much a go getter and I am inspired by her energy she puts into her blog.

What do you look for in a blog when following? What are your pet peeves?

Since I am an eclectic reader, I think my blog following is influenced by the mood that I am in. So with the variety that I read, I try to keep the blogs with a variety. I also like a blog that doesn’t have a lot of things to load. When there is too much in the main web page, it sure slows the computer down and then I get impatient and will likely just move on and not end up reading the blog.

What’s your favorite book(s)?

The top two on my list, but there are many others I probably love as well, are Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet and Water for Elephants.

Favorite author?

Choosing one, Nicholas Sparks.

What is the biggest turn off for you when you’re reading a book?

Probably when it’s too long and drags on. I do read long books, but they have to be adequate. If authors could have said the same thing in 300 or 400 pages, don’t make the book 700 or 800 pages.

What first draws you to a book to make you want to read it?

I think I have to have a character or location connection fairly immediate. I think if you can get me connected with something, whether it be a person or the location, then I can wait for the other details to come together.

Describe yourself in 3 words.

Organized, Caring, Fun.

Name a random fact about yourself.

I am only 8 years away from retirement, but I’m not 8 years away from retirement age.

Do you have a job? If so, what do you do?

I work for a county government agency monitoring a 36 million dollar budget. I have great co-workers and most of them enjoy to read, however, not usually the types of books I like. Sometimes we can actually agree on 2 or 3 over the year.

What did you want to be when you were little? Has that changed?

I did want to be a librarian because I loved books. However, when I found out you needed many, many years of college I chose a different path. Kind of funny as I have completed just as many years of college in business that I would have needed to be a librarian.

Randomness

Cats or dogs?
Both.

Favorite animal?
Horse.

White, dark, or milk chocolate?
None, not much of a chocolate fan. I enjoy gooey ooey.

Coke or Pepsi?
Coke.

Favorite TV show?
Big Bang Theory.

Color?
Purple.

Thanks for being here, Dalene! It was fantastic getting to know you!
