Novel Thoughts: Unique Names in Literature

Novel Thoughts: Unique Names in Literature

This topic was inspired by Angelfall, which had a name that annoyed me: Raffe. It was meant to be pronounced “rah-fee” (as in, short for Raphael), but every time I saw it my brain automatically read it as”rafe” (rhyming with waif). It bugged the crap out of me!! I had to make an actual effort to pronounce it the correct way, and it made my eye twitch. With some books, it works. Actually, I quite like unique names, because it […]

Novel Thoughts: Has Book Blogging Made Me Too Critical?

Novel Thoughts: Has Book Blogging Made Me Too Critical?
Posted by Jessi (Geo) on February 12, 2014 | 40 Comments

This discussion kind of stems from a discussion I had not too long ago about hype. Has being a book blogger made me a critical reader? Sometimes when I read a book and write down every single complaint I have, I wonder: If I weren’t writing down all these complaints, would I enjoy this book more? If I didn’t keep track of the complaints, would I forget them instead of dwelling on them? If I’ve been subjected to the Hype Monster, […]

Novel Thoughts: Romance in YA

Romance in YA If you haven’t already figured out by now, I am not a fan of romance. It is extremely rare for me to be fully invested in one, and 90% of the time, I hate them. Why?   The Hype Monster You know what I’m talking about – when everyone loves a book and it gets all these glowing reviews, and everybody is DYING to get their hands on it; so your hopes for the story end up rising higher and higher until they’re just so high that the book probably couldn’t live up to your expectations even if it was the greatest book ever written? Yeah, you know exactly what I mean. As a book blogger, the Hype […]

Novel Thoughts: Animal Murder in Books

Novel Thoughts: Animal Murder in Books

This topic was inspired by Lauren @ Lose Time Reading. She asked us if we have deal breakers in books, and one of hers was animal abuse. It’s one of mine, too, and I feel the need to talk about it! Animal Murder  My first question is: Why do authors feel the need to do this? To get a reaction? To create controversy? Maybe we’ll never know. But what I know is: 9 times out of 10, it is not necessary. […]

Novel Thoughts: Blogger Etiquette

Novel Thoughts: Blogger Etiquette

Blogger etiquette *This is just my opinion, and what I’ve learned in my two years of blogging. This is by no means fact or law. Isn’t it sad that I feel the need to insert a disclaimer? Now, for most of these things, I’m more lenient when it comes to newbie bloggers who don’t know any better. I probably made plenty of mistakes in my first months of blogging (I admit I was guilty of excessive commenting to get […]
