Vane Weston should have died in the category-five tornado that killed his parents. Instead, he woke up in a pile of rubble with no memories of his past - except one: a beautiful, dark-haired girl standing in the winds. She swept through his dreams ever since, and he clings to the hope that she's real.

Audra is real, but she isn't human. She's a sylph, an air elemental who can walk on the wind, translate its alluring songs, even twist it into a weapon. She's also a guardian - Vane's guardian - and has sworn an oath to protect him at all costs.

When a hasty mistake reveals their location to the enemy who murdered both their families, Audra has just days to help Vane unlock his memories. And as the storm winds gather, Audra and Vane start to realize that the greatest danger might not be the warriors coming to destroy them, but the forbidden romance growing between them.

My thoughts

This book is kind of an audio review, and kind of not. I started it via audio, and finished it by reading the rest.

Confession: I started this book two years ago and never finished. Not because I didn’t like it, but because my Audible app screwed up and I lost my spot in the audiobook. I had NO idea where I was at, so I just…never picked it back up again. The sad part is, I was really enjoying it! The audio is really good – there’s two narrators, which I like, and they both did a fabulous job. I can’t believe it took me so long to get back to it!

I absolutely LOVE the concept! It’s so cool and unique. I love the idea of sylphs, and the different types of winds: Westerly, Easterly, Southerly, and Northerly. They each have their own language, and the more of them you know, the more powerful the winds you control are. It was awesome! This book is unlike anything I’ve ever read before.

Let me just say: This book is a ROMANCE. No buts about it. It’s not a bad one though, I just didn’t get all gooey over it. Actually, the romance dragged it down a bit for me. I’m fairly certain this book could have been 5 stars without all the lovey doveyness. It started off super strong, and went a little downhill (not too much, though) in the last half. I did like Vane and Audra, though, even if I didn’t necessarily care about them together. Vane’s sarcasm was funny, and Audra was sardonic toward him in an overly serious way. They were pretty much complete opposites. Audra took the training extremely serious and everything was a joke to Vane. Her exasperation over his lackadaisical attitude was almost comical. I do think they fit well together!

While I could take or leave the romance, I am super intrigued by the concept and I definitely want to see where this series goes in the next book. I can’t wait to meet this mysterious Raiden!

The audio

Nick Podehl totally nailed Vane’s sarcasm! I think I would have liked him a lot less had I not heard the narration. Although I will say it was pretty creepy when Nick was narrating Audra through Vane’s perspective…

Kristen Leigh also did a wonderful job capturing Audra’s sober attitude, without being boring. I was hardcore picturing Alexandra Daddario when she narrated!

Both narrators had just the right amount of emotion to bring the story to life, making it completely convincing.
