Despite the tumor-shrinking medical miracle that has bought her a few years, Hazel has never been anything but terminal, her final chapter inscribed upon diagnosis. But when a gorgeous plot twist named Augustus Waters suddenly appears at Cancer Kid Support Group, Hazel's story is about to be completely rewritten.

My thoughts

So, I finally read this book. Took me long enough, eh? It didn’t really blow me away, but I did really enjoy it. I must admit that this book is very difficult to review as I don’t have much to say other than it was beautiful and heartbreaking!

John Green’s writing style is epic. He makes even the most mundane things seem interesting, and that was what made me enjoy this so much. There was hardly anything going on for the majority of the book, but it still held my interest. The way he words things makes his story so quotable!

I loooooved Hazel! She and I could be friends in real life! Augustus was pretty freaking awesome, too. He’s definitely swoon-worthy. I loved the things he did for Hazel, he was amazing!

As he read, I fell in love the way you fall asleep: Slowly, then all at once.

I loved the romance, too. It was very realistic and heartbreaking. It was doomed from the start, but it didn’t keep them from trying. Many times I was struck by the unfairness of it all, that they had come together only to be ripped apart.

If you are going to read this, have a box of tissues handy. Because it will make you cry. I knew it would, and I was trying to steel myself for the inevitable, but it still broke my heart when it happened. So sad!!!

While this book didn’t completely blow me away, I fell in love with John Green’s style and I will definitely try more of his work in the future!

audio

I loved Kate’s voice! She’s so perfect for narrating Hazel, and she had just the right tone and amount of sarcasm. She was great at narrating the other characters, too. I could easily tell who was talking. I would definitely want to listen to her in the future!

quotes

Sometimes, you read a book and it fills you with this weird evangelical zeal, and you become convinced that the shattered world will never be put back together unless and until all living humans read the book.

The dead are visible only in the terrible lidless eye of memory.

It’s hell to hold on to your dignity when the risen sun is too bright in your losing eyes.

My thoughts are stars I can’t fathom into constellations.

“That’s the thing about pain…it demands to be felt.”

“I’m in love with you, and I’m not in the business of denying myself the simple pleasure of saying true things. I’m in love with you, and I know that love is just a shout into the void, and that oblivion is inevitable, and that we’re all doomed and that there will come a day when all our labor has been returned to dust, and I know the sun will swallow the only earth we’ll ever have, and I am in love with you.”
SQUEEEEE.

  1. I’m always excited to see more love for this book! It’s heart-warming and heart-breaking at the same time. I lost it when Gus told Hazel his cancer was back—you’re definitely right about the denial. There were so many hints building up to it, but I really didn’t want my instincts to be true. :(

  2. “It didn’t really blow me away, but I did really enjoy it.”

Exactly how I felt about it!

And damn… The thing with Gus really took me by surprise. After finishing the book it seems like it would be obvious.. but I totally didn’t expect it. I guess I just got too caught up in the story to realize what might happen at the end.

    • Same here! I guess because it was gone I didn’t expect it to come back. But I kinda thought going in that they would both die at the end so I was expecting SOME kind of death!

  3. This is one of those times that I think the audiobook enhanced my reading experience. I think it was narrated wonderfully and it really brought the characters to life for me. This is the only John Green book I have read so far but it won’t be the last. Beautiful and heartbreaking describe it well!

    • It really was! That’s how The Scorpio Races was for me, too. Lots of people complained about it, but the narration was SO good that it had life and feeling when I listened to it. And same! I’ve had Looking for Alaska on my shelf forever but have yet to pick it up. Definitely love his writing style, so I need to get on that haha >.<

  4. I’m glad you liked this one! I enjoyed it, and cried with it too, but I didn’t LOVE this one. I just felt like the hype was a LITTLE much. But yes, TISSUES. So key. I saw you mentioned A Walk to Remember earlier in the comments. I LOVE THAT MOVIE TOO. I cry every time.
