I didn’t enjoy this one quite as much as I enjoyed The Hazel Wood, but I still loved stepping back into the dark and twisted world! I felt like this one was lacking in action, but thankfully it didn’t really lose my interest. Melissa’s prose is lyrical and draws you in, so that you want to continue even when there’s nothing happening. I’m not sure how I felt about the introduction of new characters. I liked Sophia well enough, but […]

If you know me, you know I am a HUGE sucker for Asian Fantasy. Especially if it’s Japanese. And there’s so few of them! This had everything I love about Japanese fantasy – oni, yokai, kitsune, miko, Shinto shrines, and plenty of glorious Japanese culture. (Which I am positively obsessed with.) That was definitely my favorite part of this book! It was super easy to picture everything – you know how some books tell you they’re in a certain country/place, […]

Wow, what a wild ride!! This book was explosive and action packed from start to finish! The second book dragged in the beginning, but this one definitely did NOT have that problem. There was never a dull moment! I have to say, Emily Suvada never disappoints when it comes to dropping bombs. So many surprises! “We’re both monsters, Jun Bei. That’s what they made us into. But that doesn’t mean we can’t do good in this world.” Jun Bei was ruthless […]

In the beginning, I was on the fence about reading this book. I had actually picked it up once, wasn’t feeling it, and moved on to something else for a while before coming back to it. The French-esque setting (but not actually France?) and social themes had a historical feel, which I hate, and I was struggling. I didn’t care about anything and it was slow going. When Lou and Reid met, everything changed. From the moment that Lou sets […]

Anyone who knows me knows that I am not a fan of contemporary and I rarely read it. Actually, this was my first contemporary romance all year, oops. I needed a break from my High Fantasy rut (and reading slump) and this was just the book for it since it’s set at Christmastime! It’s not something I’d usually have looked twice at, but Disney sent me a copy a while back, and then it showed up in my suggestions when I […]

In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act. I have some pretty mixed feelings about this book, but overall I feel pretty meh about it. Which makes it hard to review. The concept was fairly awesome. And kinda scary, really: In the future, there are no physical books or written words (they’re not banned, but people get paid to turn in paper and there’s a tax for using it, so they’re super rare) – basically everything is […]
