She will reign.

As princess of the island kingdom Visidia, Amora Montara has spent her entire life training to be High Animancer—the master of souls. The rest of the realm can choose their magic, but for Amora, it’s never been a choice. To secure her place as heir to the throne, she must prove her mastery of the monarchy’s dangerous soul magic.

When her demonstration goes awry, Amora is forced to flee. She strikes a deal with Bastian, a mysterious pirate: he’ll help her prove she’s fit to rule, if she’ll help him reclaim his stolen magic.

But sailing the kingdom holds more wonder—and more peril—than Amora anticipated. A destructive new magic is on the rise, and if Amora is to conquer it, she’ll need to face legendary monsters, cross paths with vengeful mermaids, and deal with a stow-away she never expected… or risk the fate of Visidia and lose the crown forever.

My thoughts

Fear is part of life; all that matters is what we do with it.

Murderous mermaids, sea monsters, and swashbuckling, oh my! This book was pitched as Caraval meets Throne of Glass, but it was literally nothing like them other than having magic in my opinion. It felt a lot like To Kill a Kingdom to me!

I loved the magic system! And also the backstory. The lies and mystery and secrets connected to the kingdom and its magic were fantastic! I really, really loved the story of Cato and that whole backstory! I just adore the feeling of pieces falling into place and this book had that toward the end.

I am the right choice. The only choice. And I will protect my kingdom.

Amora was a fantastic lead! She was fierce, loyal, and steadfast and it was easy to root for her. I didn’t care for Ferrick at first, but he grew on me. However, I loved Vataea! She’s such a badass! I adore that there was only friendship between the two women, no cattiness whatsoever. That is so rare in YA, we need more of it!

The mistakes I made in the past do not make me weak; instead, I’ll use them to become stronger.

Bastian was super swoony! The romance took plenty of time to develop, and had that slow burn that I love so much. When they finally got around to kissing I almost screamed FINALLY out loud, lol!  View Spoiler »

Overall, this book was really fun! It might not necessarily stick with me, but I really enjoyed it while I was reading.
