There were so many things wrong with this book in the world-building category it’s not even funny, so I’m going to get my complaints out of the way first.   First of all, I would have loved to know what year it’s supposed to be. The only thing she gives you is, “Seventy years ago science perfected the art of children.” So how far in the future from now is that perfection? Your guess is as good as mine. So […]

I had mixed feelings about this book. I loved it for the simple fact that it was unique and unlike anything I’ve ever read before. Zombie/Post-Apocalyptic/Steampunk/Victorian all in one…wow! I really enjoyed the history of what went wrong in the world, particularly America, and the physical explanation for the Laz. Fascinating and well developed. The world building was great too, I was able to get a very good hold on the atmosphere Habel painted.   The characters though, not so […]

I was really confused at the beginning because things weren’t explained right away…like the pills, what the heck are the pills?! But soon you find out that the green pill is to calm you, blue is to help you survive in case of emergency…and the red pill is the big mystery. I figured it out right before it was revealed, I was pretty proud of myself. It made sense, really, considering how Society wants to mold everyone. The sleep tags […]

When Mara’s friends die in an accident, she moves to Florida. I thought that was appropriate, considering I’m in Florida right now on vacation. Anyway, this book was pretty uneventful for the first 200 pages. A few PTSD hallucinations in the form of creepy dead people sightings here and there to keep you intrigued, that was about it. It’s mostly just Mara getting adjusted to life at a new school without her friends. After those 200 pages it picked up […]

I. HATE. LOVE. TRIANGLES!!!! Ok, now that I’ve gotten that out of my system. I was thoroughly unimpressed by this book. The plot was good, sure, but it just lacked for me. Even the ending –  with everything falling apart and the death of an important character – felt rushed. Maybe because I was skimming to get to the end and get it over with, who knows. It wasn’t a bad book necessarily, but it wasn’t memorable at all. Her prose […]

I have to admit, I didn’t read the synopsis before I started this. So, when the very first chapter was about pirates, I was a bit confused (albeit intrigued). My thought was, What does this have to do with a group of teenagers? But soon I found out – when Tory discovers the legend of Anne Bonny. From there on this book was a riveting mixture of adventure, danger, and excitement. I loved it!   The Virals bite off more than […]
