I certainly wasn’t expecting verse! It was a bit distracting, though, which is why I don’t usually read verse. I get so focused on the lyrical quality that I don’t pay attention to what’s happening. Holly Bodger’s prose was beautiful, though! I liked that Sudasa’s POV was written in verse and 5’s was written in regular prose. It made a clear distinction between their voices. I’m afraid I didn’t connect to the story quite like I’d hoped. While the idea was […]

Review: In the Afterlight by Alexandra Bracken

In the Afterlight was a heartbreaking, heart-pounding, heart-stopping end to a fantastic series! I am so in love with the Darkest Minds series and I’m super sad to let it go! Let me just say, I have never cried after a book ended just for the simple reason that it was over. Never. But when I finished this book, I was crying. I can’t believe that I will never see my favorite characters again – honestly, it’s kind of like losing a little […]

Yet man is born unto trouble, as the sparks fly upward. Broken. My heart is broken. After the last novella ended, I should have braced myself. Alexandra bracken doesn’t know the meaning of rainbows and sunshine. No Happy Ever Afters. (I’m terrified to read In the Afterlight!) I never cared much for Sam in The Darkest Minds, only because she didn’t have much of a role. Ruby’s feelings of guilt over what happened between them overshadowed anything else. I was actually […]

Caution: Possible spoilers for The Darkest Minds Wow, you guys, just wow! Sometimes middle books have this thing called Second Book Syndrome – yeah, you know what I’m talking about – and you end up being totally disappointed. Such was NOT the case with this one! It was just as good as the first book. It blew me away! As I mentioned in my review of the In Time novella, Alexandra’s prose is very engaging. She has a way with […]

DNF Review: The Book of Ivy by Amy Engel

DNF Review: The Book of Ivy by Amy Engel

When I first saw this one, I passed. When everyone else was reading it, I passed. Why? Because I hate the cover. It’s awful!! Plus, it just doesn’t scream “dystopian” to me. It looks like a espionage-thriller kind of thing (in the vein of Heist Society), so I wasn’t even remotely interested. But, then I saw that book twin Ashley rated it 5 stars, and I actually read the synopsis. Hmm, sounds like a dystopian style Hatfields vs. McCoys story with forbidden love. […]

At first, I didn’t really care about the story. I tend to see novellas as a waste of time, nothing but filler. But as soon as Zu made an appearance, I was interested. And I found myself becoming more and more invested in the story. And to tell you the truth, this story actually isn’t just filler like most novellas! I didn’t care for Gabe at first, but I think that’s kind of the point. He’s kind of a jerk […]
