I have very mixed feelings about this book. It’s definitely not Howard’s best work. (Stain is FANTASTIC, read that instead.) I loved the premise and setting – I’ve never read a Phantom of the Opera retelling, and don’t see many of them to begin with. Howard’s take on incubus/succubus lore was really cool! I also loved Rune’s song and abilities and how they worked. However, the romance utterly ruined it for me. The soulmate trope has to be done a […]

I love how creepy and twisted this one was! There’s also a little mystery aspect to it, which keeps the pace moving nicely. I never knew what was going to happen next. I loved how atmospheric this book was, too. I read it for Horror October and it was the perfect vibe for Halloween! The Harrow house and the things that happened in it were super creepy! I wish I had connected to the characters better, though. I loved Bryony […]

I have no idea how to rate this because I still can’t decide if I loved it or hated it?? I vacillated pretty wildly back and forth at various points of the story. The beginning was rougghhhh. I almost DNFed this book because the first 20% is PAINFULLY, in-your-face high school. Almost like it was trying wayyy too hard to feel like high school. To the point that it was nauseating. It was shallow and juvenile, and I was starting to wonder […]

This book was so unique! I absolutely LOVED the atmospheric setting – Eulalie Island was fantastic! It’s creepy and unsettling and I never knew what was going to happen next. I adore dark and disturbing and this book definitely delivered on both points. The author brought the island to life in vivid detail! The descriptions made things so easy to picture without being too descriptive. Eulalie Island felt like a real place. This would make an awesome movie! I found a […]

It’s been a while since I was so grossly disappointed in a sequel. This book has severe second book syndrome. I loved Raybearer, but everything I loved about about it was missing from this book. In my review of Raybearer I praised the richly enchanting world – that it was vivid and and captivating, and that the culture saturated the story – and we got none that in this book. The core relationships of the first book are also missing. […]

Wow, this book was so powerful! It takes a hard look at the relationships between women – at the empowerment of sisterhood, but also at the power that women have to tear each other down (and how patriarchy pits us against one another). That we are stronger together instead of against one another. It’s been a while since I read a dystopian I enjoyed this much! It had a very Lord of the Flies feel when we were seeing the […]
