Review: 5 to 1 by Holly Bodger

I certainly wasn’t expecting verse! It was a bit distracting, though, which is why I don’t usually read verse. I get so focused on the lyrical quality that I don’t pay attention to what’s happening. Holly Bodger’s prose was beautiful, though! I liked that Sudasa’s POV was written in verse and 5’s was written in regular prose. It made a clear distinction between their voices. I’m afraid I didn’t connect to the story quite like I’d hoped. While the idea was […]

Tricked by gorgeous cover yet again. *sighs* With the lovely cover and intriguing synopsis, I was sure this was going to be a “me” book. Sadly, it wasn’t. It ended up just being a major letdown, I’m afraid. Honestly, I’ve already forgotten 90% of this book after a few weeks. Thank goodness I took notes! (I should have reviewed this much sooner, obviously. But still.) It wasn’t memorable at all, and definitely didn’t leave any kind of lasting impression on […]

Holy wow, this book was amazing! It’s been a very long time since I’ve read something that I got so much sheer enjoyment from! There were so many times where the WWE chant “this is awesome” was running through my head. (And probably no one is going to know what I’m talking about.) Because it was – freaking awesome, that is! I was grinning like an idiot and laughing out loud throughout the whole book. That high of an enjoyment level […]

This was a tad difficult to rate. It was mostly enjoyable while I was actually reading, but now that I’m not it’s….fading. While there were things happening, I don’t really feel like all that much happened. It seemed like a bunch of running around and avoiding getting killed, with no real plot. We don’t find out what Dai’s purpose is (or what the point of the numbers is) until closer to the end. There was a lull around 20% or so where […]

I’m going to be honest, I really struggled with this book at first. The first half was excruciatingly boring, to the point that I almost gave up. I had to put it down several times – I read to 10%, put it down and picked up Trial by Fire; picked it back up after I finished that one only to put it back down at 20%; started and finished Fiendish, then picked HoF back up again, this time pushing myself through […]

This isn’t the first Caragh O’Brien book I’ve tried. I attempted to read Birthmarked maybe 2 years ago, and DNFed it after 20-30 pages because it just wasn’t catching my interest. I had the same problem with this one. After only 8% I was already bored to tears, but I told myself I would give it until 20% before making a decision to see if it improved. It didn’t. I read nearly 90 pages of this book before I decided to […]
