I’m SO sad I didn’t love this one like I did the first book. The shining star of the first is the relationship between Lionheart/Climbs Quickly and Stephanie, and I felt like it took a bit of a backseat in this one. It’s still fairly prominent, and still utterly beautiful and endearing; but it’s lessened from A Beautiful Friendship. We spent less time with Lionheart and that diminished my enjoyment a lot. After Cerulean Sea, I would have picked this up regardless (even though I wasn’t a huge fan of Under the Whispering Door); but at YALLfest I saw him on a panel where he talked about the book and said it had a sentient Roomba with anxiety. Overall this book was just okay for me. It fell completely in the mediocre middle ground – okay characters, okay world (albeit a bit vague), okay plot. It doesn’t really stand out in the sea of Urban Fantasy and witch books, and there’s nothing really all that special about it; but I did enjoy it while I was listening!
